The objectives of the Cup are to promote the great wines of the Left Bank of Bordeaux and to bring together students from different cultures who share the same passion: wine.

London’s qualifications saw a competitive final on Saturday, conducted under the eyes of jury members of Bordeaux’s Commanderie du Bontemps: Jean-Pierre Foubet (Château de Camensac, Château Chasse-Spleen), François Nony (Château Caronne Ste Gemme), Céline Villars-Foubet (Château Chasse-Spleen, Château de Camensac), Lucas Leclercq (Château Fourcas Dupré, Château D’Agassac).

The competition started with 10 multiple-choice questions worth 2 points apiece, on general knowledge and technical questions on the vineyards and châteaux of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, with 1 minute of answer time per question.

The list of topics contestants can be questioned on includes:

  • Appellation (regulation, location)
  • Members of the Commanderie: brokers, wine merchants, or Châteaux
  • Grape varieties
  • Soil
  • Technical aspects (cellars or wine)
  • Châteaux (owner families, location, label, architecture, fun facts)
  • Commanderie du Bontemps (organization, galas, history)

The multiple-choice questions were followed by a blind tasting test. Three series of three questions comparing three wines. Scoring on 30 points. Q1 = 5 points, Q2 = 3 points, Q3 = 2 points with 2 minutes of answer time per question.

This year’s Left Bank Bordeaux Cup grand final, to be held at Château Duhart-Milon in Pauillac, France in June, will include teams from University of Cambridge in the UK and University of St Gallen, Switzerland.
