The Rocca di Frassinello winery, estate placed in the Tuscan Maremma (few kilometres from Bolgheri), has been the second venture founded by Domini Castellare di Castellina and the first French- Italian joint project in the winery field. The label was born thanks to the friendship between Castellare and the Domaines Baron de Rothshild-Lafite and brings together the experience of Castellare in the cultivation of Tuscany’s vine varieties and the Lafite’s straordinary know-how of classical French vines like Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Shiraz.
Born as an inspired project the winery today counts 90 hectares of planted vineyards in the part of Gavorrano and Roccastrada municipalities.
The hectares respect the vision of the company and are therefore characterized by an equal division between Italian and French varieties (curious takeout: all the wines are blends). The climate, on the right hillside of the Rocca di Frassinello estate is mild both during the winters and the summer months and gently experiences a constant breeze that takes away any moisture from the air.
Here you are a selection of the wines proposed by the Rocca di Frassinello winery:
But the wines are not the only thing that contributes to the magic of this estate, Rocca di Frassinello chose Renzo Piano, bound to the winery thanks to the longstanding friendship with Paolo Panerai, in order to conceive and the design the winery in its all.
The architectural structure is essential and “primitive” in its shape and has been thought to be the remaining the footprint of a place where productive work meets the sacredness of nature and humility. Renzo Piano has revolutionised the concept of space posing questions about what the really heart of a cellar is.
The barrel room set at the centre of the cellar makes possible to maintain humidity and temperature in a stable and controlled position, all around the steel tanks are distributed on two sides of the area and above each stand a chute that opens onto the roof above is found. “The roof of the barrique in fact serves a dual purpose as the large work area created above […] while from those chutes come down the grapes carried in crates, which before descending without the stress of pumps are carefully selected on special work benches”.
Guided tours are offered and tailor-made for each of the visitor’s desires and the tastings are carried on personally by the oenologist of the winery.
Immerse yourself in this breathtaking experience and explore the borders of this wonderful estate !
